Anushka Shetty, renowned for her roles in films like "Bahubali" and "Arundhati," recently disclosed that she suffers from a rare laughing disorder. At 42 years old, the actress revealed how this condition can sometimes interfere with her work on set. In an interview with Indiaglitz, she explained, "I have a laughing disease. You might wonder, ‘Is laughing a problem?’ For me, it is. If I start laughing, I can’t stop for 15-20 minutes. While watching or shooting comedy scenes, I literally roll on the floor laughing, and the shoot has been halted many times.” ALSO READ: Kalki 2898 AD Movie REVIEW: Prabhas-Amitabh Bachchan's Fight For Deepika Padukone's ‘Maa’ Is The Highlight Of The Mythology-Inspired Film

This disorder, known as the Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA), is a neurological condition that causes involuntary episodes of laughter or crying, unrelated to the person’s actual emotional state. PBA can be confusing and distressing both for those who suffer from it and for those around them. Imagine finding a joke funny and then being unable to stop laughing for an extended period, even in inappropriate situations. This can be quite embarrassing and disruptive. PBA is linked to various neurological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), multiple sclerosis, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. If a family member has had PBA, there may be a higher likelihood of developing the condition in response to other neurological issues or injuries. Structural or functional abnormalities in the brain can impact areas responsible for emotional regulation, potentially leading to PBA.

The symptoms of PBA include uncontrollable laughter or crying in situations where such emotional responses are inappropriate. For instance, a person might start laughing uncontrollably during a serious moment or crying during a humorous situation. This unpredictability can significantly affect the quality of life, social interactions, and may lead to feelings of embarrassment, anxiety, and depression.

While Anushka Shetty has not confirmed an official diagnosis of PBA, the symptoms she described strongly indicate this condition. Treatment for PBA typically involves medication following a diagnosis. Regular checkups with healthcare professionals are crucial to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment and to manage the condition effectively.
