Kangana Ranaut is leaving no stone unturned in promoting her upcoming film, Emergency, in which she not only plays the lead role but also serves as the director. In a recent promotional interview, the BJP MP shared an intriguing anecdote, revealing that she was once offered an item song in the blockbuster film Ram Leela, which starred Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. The role ultimately went to Priyanka Chopra, who performed the item number in the film. During her conversation with NBT, Kangana explained why she turned down the offer, despite the fact that it was made by none other than Sanjay Leela Bhansali, one of the most respected directors in the industry. Kangana said, “Aap dekh lijiye, mujhe Sanjay Leela Bhansali ne bhi Ram Leela film mein item number ke liye bulaya. Sab logo ne mujhe bola yeh paagal hai, Bhansali ko mana kar rahi. I said, main nahi kar sakti. Chaahe Bhansali bula le chaahe koi bhi, I can’t do item numbers. Artists need to show such integrity. Her refusal to do the item number sparked mixed reactions. Some people criticized her by pointing out her roles in films like Double Dhamaal, Rascals, and Rajjo, questioning where her "integrity" was when she accepted those roles. On the other hand, many people thanked Kangana for stepping aside, as they believed Priyanka Chopra delivered an outstanding performance in the song.
This revelation by Kangana comes on the heels of another instance where she discussed rejecting high-profile roles. She recently mentioned that she turned down a role in the film Sanju after Ranbir Kapoor personally approached her for it. Kangana also stated that she has declined offers to work with the three Khans—Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan—because of the limited scope of the women’s roles in those films.
When asked in a chat with Siddharth Kannan whether these decisions have strained her relationships in the industry, Kangana confidently asserted that her professional relationships remain unaffected by her public statements or decisions to decline certain roles. According to her, rejecting these offers has not caused any awkwardness or tension with those she has shaded or rejected publicly.
