Jaya Bachchan Stands Up For Sanjay Leela Bhansali In Rajya Sabha
The actress-turned-politician has criticised the attack on the Padmavati filmmaker in strong words, targeting the “growing intolerance in the country”
Bollywood icon Jaya Bachchan took a stand against the recent violence against Sanjay Leela Bhansali, while addressing a Rajya Sabha session.
Bhansali was attacked by a mob in Jaipur who accused the filmmaker of “distorting history” in his upcoming Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Shahid Kapoor starrer Padmavati.
And Jaya Bachchan has joined the chorus of voices against the aggressive arm-twisting faced by the Bollywood fraternity.
The veteran actress, who is also a Samajwadi Party leader, said: "Creativity should not be subjected to such treatment. There was growing intolerance in the country with the selected few assuming that they represent the masses under certain political patronage.”
“They have started taking law and order into their own hands. They have no respect for the constitutional values or law and order. The film fraternity has long been fighting this menace with little or no support from the government,” added Mrs Bachchan.
"Film industry creates large number of employment opportunity and any such disruption affects earnings, growth and employment generation within the industry,” Jaya further said.
Jaya also expressed her displeasure over the government not condemning the incident in which Bhansali was physically assaulted and film equipment was damaged.
The National Award-winning Bollywood director was allegedly slapped and assaulted on January 27 by a mob of activists of the Shree Rajput Karni Sena in Jaipur on the sets of Padmavati.
