Veteran Bollywood screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar never shies away from expressing his views on the happenings in the country. He has always been vocal about his views on religion and that he is an atheist, someone who doesn’t believe in God. Known to express his views without beating around the bush, he recently attended an event in Mumbai where he opened up about why he is an atheist and expressed how religion belongs in the dark ages.

Talking about the reason behind him being an atheist, Akhtar explained that he has the ability to “think.” Furthering his point, he noted that during the earlier time, people were punished for thinking about things scientifically. He added how the people of 20th and 21st century have “split personalities” for believing in religion. While explaining his point he stated an ISRO scientist who can send a rocket to the moon, pray to God after sending it. He said, “This is schizophrenia.”

Quoted by the Free Press Journal, the 79-year-old screenwriter-lyricist said, “A man in India from ISRO, who can send a rocket to the precise place of moon... The moment you send it, you go out and go to a temple. It has happened for the first time in human history where your own knowledge and information, which you own, and your faith are not on the same page.”

Akhtar went on to share how “all religions belong to the dark ages.” Explaining his point, he said, “Their roots are in the dark ages. You bring the dark age with you. Your umbilical cord has not been cut from the dark ages.”


On the work front, Javed Akhtar was last seen in the documentary series Angry Young Men. Talking about the docu-series, it revisits the challenges faced by maverick screenwriter duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, also known as Salim-Javed. Currently streaming on Prime Video, the series sees their family members as well as industry veterans like Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan sharing their testimonies about them.
