Karan Johar has guided viewers through an extensive tour of his home, that has been crafted with thoughtful eclectic choices that elegantly encapsulate the stories of his loving family and illustrious career in cinema
Karan Johar is a true fashionista and the visionary director knowns that an ideal home should harmonise with one’s lifestyle and possess a unique character that inevitably mirrors the personality of its owner. He opines that a home is not only a physical space but also a sanctuary providing quietness, tranquillity and solace — hence the familiar expression “I want to go back home” when people feel weary.
Now, the filmmaker has guided viewers through an extensive tour of his home, that has been crafted with thoughtful eclectic choices that elegantly encapsulate the stories of his loving family and illustrious career in cinema, Karan recently shared additional insights into what, in his view, transforms a house into a home and how his residence reflects every aspect of who he is.
“In a day and age where everything is so loud, my home and my moment on my bed, watching that television or reading a book, that is peace. So in many ways, coming back home means coming back to peace,” he said while taking part in Asian Paints’ Where The Heart Is.
“Every house says, ‘I know all your relationships, secrets and happiness, I know it all.’ Your walls know everything. That’s why they say, ‘If walls had ears…’ My walls are made by the energy of my soul. So my walls are collaborators. They work in tandem with me,” he added.
The filmmaker recalled that it was at this home, specifically at the dining table, where they had their first marketing meeting for his latest release Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani.
“If the home is where the heart is, then the bedroom is where the comfort is,” Karan mentioned as he elaborated on how the bedroom is where most of his personality unfolds.
In the clip, KJo also offered an extensive view of a section of his bedroom about which he is a bit “shy, embarrassed and self-conscious” - his closet. He also mentioned that none of his sartorial choices reflect his interior design preferences, Karan said that his closet is filled with garments of various textures and fabrics.
“It’s on those days when I observed my mother listening to old music that I reflect on when my fascination for cinema first penetrated my head,” he recalled. “Since I lived in a constricted space, I felt like that is what attracted me more to these large opulent spaces,” Karan said, adding that the first thing he does upon returning home is to go see his mother.
“My approach to any aesthetic is that it should be pleasing to the naked eye. That when you walk in, you’re not jarred by it,” he observed. “This home brings the energy of my 25-year career and also my responsibility as a son and parent,” he mentioned, adding “Home is where the soul lies.”
