Farrukh Jaffar Passes Away At 88: Gulabo Sitabo’s Fatima Begum Breathed Her Last On October 15 In Lucknow
Veteran actress Farrukh Jaffar was hospitalised in Sahara Hospital earlier this month after she complained of breathlessness
Veteran actor Farrukh Jafar known for performances in Sultan, Gulabo Sitabo is no more, she passed away in Lucknow on October 15, 2021. Her elder daughter Mehru Jafar, told PTI, her mother being hospitalised on October 4, after she complained of breathlessness. Her lungs were unable to take the oxygen provided to her. She was hospitalised at Sahara Hospital. Mehru Jafar was quoted saying, “She was admitted to the hospital on October 4 due to breathlessness. She was not well. Her lungs were unable to take the oxygen that had been given to her. She passed away in the evening at around 6 pm.”
The late actress’ grandson Shaaz Ahmad shared the news of her death on Twitter, he tweeted, “My grandmother and wife of Freedom fighter, Ex MLC Mr S.M.Jaffar and Veteran Actress Mrs Farrukh Jafar passed away today at 7 pm in Lucknow.” Her last rites will be conducted on Saturday morning. Farrukh Jafar began her career in 1963 as one of the first radio announcers of Vividh Bharti Lucknow, later she starred in 1981 Umrao Jaan where she portrayed the role of Rekha’s on-screen mother.
However, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades that proved to be a pivotal point in her career. Later she went to star in Aamir Khan’s Peepli Live, where she was seen as an ill-tempered bidi-smoking mother-in-law. Followed by starring in Salman Khan’s Sultan, where she played a cool grandmother, she was also seen in Nawazuddin Siddiqui's movie, Photograph. Her heart-winning performance was of Fatima Begum in Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo. The actress played Amitabh Bachchan’s onscreen wife.

When was praised for performance in Gulabo Sitabo, she told PTI, “Maine suna ki Begum baazi maar le jaati hai picture mein. ( I have heard that Begum outruns everyone in the film). Such praise about my character makes me happy.”
The screenwriter of Gulabo Sitabo, Juhi Chaturvedi, paid her last tribute, she wrote in her post, “Begum is gone Farrukh ji, there was no one, and there will be no one like you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to connect with you. Please stay safe in the other world of Allah. RIP #FarrukhJaffar #Begum #FattoBi #FatimaBegum #GulaboSitabo.”
Married to journalist-politician Syed Muhammad Jaffar, and is survived by daughters Mehru and Shaheen.
