Farhan Akhtar's Tofaan Gets A Release Date; Director Rakeysh Omprakahs Mehra Spills The Beans - EXCLUSIVE
Farhan Akhtar's film Toofan helmed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra opts for an OTT release. Here's when and where it will premiere
The hope that the big filmmakers with big-screen films won’t go the OTT way seems like a distant dream now. More and more of the biggies are going straight to the digital platform. Now it’s Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s lavish sports drama Toofan featuring Farhan Akhtar as a boxer fighting his way to glory that has gone to the streaming platform.
For weeks now, there was speculation that Mehra’s sports drama, his second with Farhan after Bhaag Milka Bhaag, was going the digital way. Now confirming this, Rakeysh tells me the film will premiere on May 21 on Amazon Prime. Even though the theatres have reopened post the lockdown and many films are going the conventional way of releasing on the big screen, the makers of Toofan seem to focus on getting the best exposure for their film. In the past one year, many films have been released on OTT platforms and the list includes big films like Coolie No 1, Akshay Kumar's Laxxmi and many more. Guess that's the way forward.
Toofan was earlier slated to release on October 2 but due to the pandemic, the film's release date got pushed.
Amazon seems to be currently shifting its focus away from its lineup of web-series after the Tandav controversy. Sources tell me Amazon is in negotiations to buy several big-budgeted films including Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Heropanti 2.
