Emergency: Shiromani Akali Dal Urges CBFC To Stop Release Of Kangana Ranaut's Film - DEETS INSIDE
The Delhi unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal has called on the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to halt the release of the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency, citing concerns that the film could incite communal tension and spread misinformation. The film, in which Ranaut, a BJP MP, portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is set to hit theaters on September 6. In a letter to the CBFC, Paramjit Singh Sarna, the Delhi president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, expressed his alarm over the film's trailer. He stated that the trailer, which was released recently, misrepresents historical facts, particularly regarding the Sikh community, and promotes social discord and hatred. Sarna argued that such depictions are not only misleading but also deeply offensive, posing a threat to the social harmony of Punjab and the nation as a whole. Sarna emphasized the potential dangers of the film, noting that it could provoke communal tensions and spread misinformation. He urged the CBFC to use its authority to prevent the film's release, stressing that while freedom of speech is important, there must be a clear boundary between that right and the dissemination of content that could harm societal harmony.

The film Emergency explores the period of the Emergency imposed on June 25, 1975, by the Indira Gandhi-led Congress government, during which civil rights were suspended for nearly two years. This film marks Kangana Ranaut's first release after being elected as an MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh on a BJP ticket. The BJP-led central government had recently announced that June 25 would be observed as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honour those who endured the hardships of that era.

Emergency, directed by Kangana Ranaut, features a star-studded cast, including Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade. The film is produced by Zee Studios, Kangana Ranaut, and Renu Pitti.
