Diwali 2019: Thugs Of Hindostan To Saawariya; Films That Released On Diwali And Flopped Big Time Without A Trace
For Bollywood filmmakers, Diwali is among one of the best phases to release their films; however, not all films manage to leave a mark and turn out to be phuskis! On the occasion of Diwali 2019 here’s a rundown of some big budgeted films that flopped at the box-office
The festival of Diwali calls for lights, sweets, fun, patakas and, of course, our Bollywood films. Over the years, various filmmakers have been releasing their big-budgeted films on the occasion of Diwali, simply because it’s everyone’s favourite festive season and attracts people to theatres in a large number. It is also believed that the golden phase of Diwali guarantees solid numbers at the screens as well as the box-office. However, as unfortunate as it sounds, at the end what matters the most is content, especially in today’s time. And, as a consequence of the same, there have various surprising expectations that, despite having an ensemble cast and grandeur, turned out to be the phuski bombs on Diwali. So, here’s a list of some Diwali releases that flopped big time.
1 – Thugs of Hindostan
Thugs of Hindostan boasted of an ensemble cast, grand visuals and was backed by one of the most solid production houses, yet failed to make it big at the box-office. Why? Well, simply because of a haywire plot that had no substance. It starred Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh and had hit the big screens during last Diwali and was a huge disaster on its first day itself. There were major expectations, considering all the promising elements it had promised but in vain.
2 – Shivaay
Shivaay was Ajay Devgn’s one of his most ambitious projects ever made and the film opened to decent reviews; however, the film’s fascinating visuals and a promising story failed to create an impact. It was due to a major clash with Karan Johar’s directorial Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that starred Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan in the lead roles. This clash had also resulted in a crack between Ajay and KJo; however, the two have now mended it.
3 - Action Replayy
Action Replayy reunited Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after seven long years and had a unique plot of a time travel comedy; however, the film’s bizarre and messed up execution couldn’t save it from becoming a total dud. Even Akshay and Aishwarya’s magical chemistry couldn’t save it and you know the worst thing? It clashed with Rohit Shetty’s blockbuster comedy franchise, Golmaal 3.
4 - Main Aur Mrs Khanna
Main Aur Mrs Khanna starred Salman Khan, Sohail Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan and had a love triangle plot. Well, the film was heavily promoted on Salman Khan’s name; however, as it hit the big screens, it turned out Sohail has more screen space than Salman. This didn’t go well the audiences and they were majorly disappointed.
5 – Saawariya
Saawariya marked the big, albeit disappointing, Bollywood debut of Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it also had a Salman Khan cameo but failed to work at the box-office, due to its weak storyline. Further, Saawariya also clashed with Shah Rukh Khan and then-debutante Deepika Padukone’s Om Shanti Om, a blockbuster film of that time.
Now, this was a blast from the past. As for Diwali 2019, we have three biggies like Housefull 4, Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh releasing on the same day. Let’s see what fate has in store for them. (ALSO READ - Happy Diwali 2019: These Bollywood Actresses Are No Less Than Any Diwali Patakha)
