We cant think of any other Bollywood star who deserves the honour more. One of the finest talents to have ever graced the big screen, Nargis has given us iconic films like Awara, Shree 420, Chori Chori, Barsaat and Raat Aur Din among others.
And who can forget Mother India? Ask any leading actress today and shell tell you, without batting an eyelid, that Radha (Nargis character in the film) is her dream role.
In fact, Mother India was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Not just that, Nargis became the first actress to receive the inaugural National Award for her performance in Raat Aur Din in 1968. Whats more, the award for Best Feature Film on National Integration in the annual National Awards is called the Nargis Dutt Award in her honour.
After her marriage to Sunil Dutt in 1958, she lessened her movie appearances considerably. Instead, she focussed on forming the Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe, which held stage shows at border areas. An actress par excellence, she was also an active social worker and became the first patron of Spastics Society Of India in the early 1970s.
Her untimely death in 1981 left a void in the Hindi film industry. Even though it has been almost half a decade since she last appeared on screen, we are yet to find another actress of her stature.
