Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam is celebrating his 66th birthday today., 2nd June. The National Awarding winning director is known for making iconic movies like Guru,  Roja, and Dil Se to name a few. Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala starrer the 1998 film stands out in his filmography and is one of the most loved movies of all time. But do you know SRK tricked Mani Ratnam to let him dance to the iconic song Chaiyya Chaiyya'?

Yes, you read that right! In an old interview, lyricist Gulzar revealed the same. He said Shah Rukh convinced Mani to let him dance to the beats of the popular song. Gulzar mentioned that Chaiyya Chaiyya was inspired by a Sufi song Thaiyya Thaiyya by Bulleh Shah. When SRK heard the lyrics of the song, he didn’t want to be performed by a group of fakirs in the background, as was planned earlier. The actor wanted to dance to its peppy beats and therefore he ‘tricked’ Mani Ratnam by saying the song was a deep poem, and he wanted to perform on it. Back then, the lyricist was quoted as saying, “Mani asked me if it is very high poetry, and I said yes… And this is how SRK tricked Mani and fulfilled his wish of dancing to the tune of Chaiyya Chaiyya, which became a hit number.”

On a related note, Chaiyya Chaiyya was composed by AR Rahman and its lyrics were penned by Gulzar. The song showed Shah Rukh and Malaika Arora dancing on the top of a moving train. Interestingly, Farah Khan earned big as she took home the Filmfare Award for best choreography for the song that year.
