Chandni Bar Clocks 20 Years: Madhur Bhandarkar Reveals He Once Joked To Kareena Kapoor Khan That Her Clothes In Heroine Cost More Than The Film's Budget
As Chandni Bar clocks 20 years of its release, director Madhur Bhandarkar opens up about the possibility of its sequel.
Director Madhur Bhandarkar's film Chandni Bar, starring Tabu in the lead, completes two decades of its release today. In a recent interview, Madhur got candid as he reminisced about his film. The director opened up about the budget of the film that prompted him to joke that Kareena Kapoor Khan's clothes in Heroine cost more.
When asked if Chandni Bar was a risky gamble at that time, Madhur Bhandarkar told ETimes, "It was very risky. People even had a problem with the title of the film. Many thought it was very cheap, and a B-grade title. I researched the film for about six months."
He added, "When I approached producers for it, they wanted me to put some item numbers in the film, which I didn't want to. My first film did not work, so there was a lot of pressure on me, but I was hell-bent on making the film the way I wanted to. I made the movie on a very small budget. So much so that I once jokingly told Kareena that I had made Chandni Bar on a budget that was smaller than what I spent on her clothes in Heroine." Heroine was released in 2012, and also starred Arjun Rampal, Randeep Hooda and Mugdha Godse. Furthermore, talking about the possibility of Chandni Bar's sequel, the director said that he wants to make part two either as a show or as a movie, but it may not happen immediately because he is busy with other projects. "Whenever it happens, it will delve into how the lives of these bar dancers came crashing down when dance bars were forced to shut shop. A lot of them were out of work and the dynamics of their business changed forever," he added.
