Andar Ki Baat: Decoding The Shah Rukh-Aamir-Netflix Triangle
A few days ago, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan had a longish meeting with the Netflix CEO at Mannat. We all went crazy speculating about that meeting but perhaps none of us got it right or even close to it.

Now, finally, we have a source who is in the know of the meeting, who tells us the inside story. Since there are three big parties involved here, there could be a margin of error, which would stem only if there is a change in plan.

SpotboyE.com has the latest buzz on this that Netflix wants to buy the rights of all films of Shah Rukh and Aamir which hit theatres from now on. This means that you will see the films of these two Khans first on Netflix and not on Sony/Star/Colors/Zee.

Will that make Sony, Star, Colors and Zee redundant? Not really, but they will have to buy the satellite rights from Netflix.

So, will it be easy for Netflix to buy all the Aamir and SRK films from here on? Not difficult because most of their films are produced by them (SRK & Aamir) only.

Will the satellite rates drop because TV channels might not get sufficient sponsors after a certain section of the people have seen it on Netflix? Not really because Netflix has still not perpetrated incisively into smaller towns and rural areas.

Who stands to lose in the process? Theatres. People might flock lesser into theatres because they know that Netflix would release it in 4-6 weeks after release. This in turn means that filmmakers will have to churn out products which turn out to be an experience when viewed on the big screen. If the movies are good, they will invariably run.
The advent of Netflix should not make the alarm bells ring. Didn't films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Maine Pyar Kiya, Baazigar, Darr, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na and Ghayal to name a few, flourish at the box-office in the 80s and 90s when video cassettes were sprawled all around us?

And who stands to gain?
Shah Rukh, Aamir, and of course, Netflix. Ditto for other stars whom Netflix approaches.

How does Netflix gain when it pays a hefty amount to SRK and Aamir? By bringing SRK and Aamir on board, Netflix would increase its number of subscriptions. This in turn would not only cut even the money they pay to the two Khans but also allow them to make more inroads into India.

And will that make the Censor board toothless? More or less yes, but uncensored stuff wouldn't go on national television. A censor certificate would definitely be required for that.

Wouldn't the Censor Board come down heavily on Netflix and insist that it needs to have a Censor Certificate of every product it displays? If that happens, Netflix will back out from India. Would India want a company which churns money for them to end their services? Certainly not.

If that's the larger picture, remember you read it here first.
