Reports suggest that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play a negative role in this period drama directed by Mani Ratnam. Based on Tamil novel titled Kalki, Ash will play Nandini, who is hungry for power. As per the Tamil historical novel, Nandini plays Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar's wife who is a chancellor and a treasurer of the Chola Kingdom. Her character will display qualities of being manipulative, mysterious and revengeful. As per the novel, her character Nandini aims for the downfall of the Chola Kindgom as she was betrayed by them.

Novel is based on great Chola emperor's life Arulmozhi Varman. As per reports in Hindustan Times, film is in its pre-production stage as massive sets are being erected in Film City and the film is likely to go on floors by end of 2019.

This would be Aish's second negative outing on silver screen after Khakee. As per reports megastar Amitabh Bachchan too was supposed to join the cast, if this happens the Bachchans will reunite on screen after eleven long years. The duo was seen sharing screen space in Sarkar Raj in 2005.
