After 'Mental', Censor Board Rejects The Word 'Pagal'; Amrish Puri's Grandson's Debut Film Needs Amendment - EXCLUSIVE
After we have had several films having the word 'pagal' in their title and songs, Censor Board has sent Bollywood a message albeit indirectly that they cannot use the word pagal indiscriminately. It's not if you use that word in lighter context (pagal ho tum, pagalpan chhodo), or say, in romantic context (dil toh pagal hai, main tere pyar mein pagal). The problem would arise if and when the word 'pagal' has been used in hinting at someone being clinically mad.

The first to get the axe on this is Amrish Puri's grandson Vardhan Puri's debut film Paagal, produced by his dad Rajeev Puri. Not only the title will have to be changed here, even the lines in the film where the usage of the word connects to mental illness, will need to be reworked on.

SpotboyE.com has a copy of the Censor Board's objection in question.

The Censor Board objected to the word  'Mental' in Ekta Kapoor's Mental Hai Kya not too long ago and the title had to be changed to Judgementall Hai Kya.

When contacted, Rajeev Puri said he had received the changes that the Censor Board wants and he is working on them. "We are not upset. We are making the changes," he said.

Puri confirmed that the Censor Board has not banned the word 'pagal'. "No, there is no generalisation," he emphasised.

Vardhan Puri chipped in, "We think that kuch cheezein aisi hoti hai which will help us in the narrative but kuch cheezon pe unhone (Censors) light daali jaise ki some things which are related to social stigma, and at the end of the day, it made a lot of social sense. We discussed with our team and felt that the changes that have been asked for, don't affect the film. We are doing the modifications. We are a responsible family and shall never insist on anything which can degrade somebody."

Added Vardhan, "We shall come up with a new title that will be stronger than the one which we shall lose."

The new copy of the film with a new title will have to be shown to the Censors. Perhaps only post that, Rajeev will decide the film's release date.
