Famously known as Lata didi in the film industry, veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar turns 90 today. On this occasion, the Government of Indian is all set to confer her with a new title Daughter Of The Nation, which will add one more feather to her cap. Lata Mangeshkar has sung innumerable songs such as in thirty-six regional languages of India and some foreign languages as well. However, she majorly crooned for Hindi, Marathi and Bengali movies, making her a huge singing sensation in India at a very early age.



Born to Deenanath Mangeshkar, Natya Sangeet musician and classical vocalist and Shevanti Mangeshkar on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She is the eldest sibling of the Mangeshkar family, followed by Meena Khadikar, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Though people have avidly followed the singer since years now for her magical voice, still are there are unknown facts about the singer which will surprise you and will increase respect for this veteran singer furthermore.


Singer under pressure not by choice

Lata who lost her father Deenanath Mangeshkar at a very early age due to heart disease had to take the responsibility of her family and hence she started singing and tried her hands at acting to fulfill the household needs. Ultimately becoming the breadwinner for her family at the age of thirteen.

Debut song remains unheard till date

Though she crooned her first song for the Marathi movie Kiti Hasaal titled Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari, but unfortunately, it was dropped from the movie in the final cut.

Fallout with legendary musician S D Burman

Lata had once confessed of being short-tempered. In the 1950s the veteran singer had a fallout with legendary musician and singer S D Burman, post which the two did not team up for good 12 years. The duo came together for a project in 1962

Lata’s magical voice broke PM Jawaharlal Nehru into tears

After the end of Indo-China war in 1963, when Lata crooned Aye Mere Watan ke Logon to pay her tribute to martyrs, former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru broke into tears.

Recognition in Guinness Book of Records

Veteran Lata Mangeshkar was included in the Guinness Book of Records for recording the most number of songs in the year 1974.

Lata’s last songs for Meena Kumari’s films

The veteran singer crooned for ace actress Meena Kumari’s last flick Pakeezah. Songs Chalte Chalte and Inhi Logon Ne are still considered most heard and loved songs.

Launch of her production house

In 1990 Lata launched her production house under which she produced Gulzar’s movie Lekin.
