Five Reasons Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Is Immortal

Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is undoubtedly one of Bollywood's best romances. The movie, which celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday, is ageless.

But in hindsight, DDLJ was not just about Raj-Simran (Shah Rukh Khan-Kajol) romance. Here are five other factors that make DDLJ a very special movie.

The Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye number saw her setting the hearts of an entire generation aflutter.

#4 That Dad-Son Friendship

Dad-son friendships may have been shown in earlier Bollywood movies as well, but in DDLJ, it formed an important part of the film script (Anupam Kher-SRK).

That 'Oh Puchi Oh Lola' sequence that you see is actually cinema history being created right there.

#3 That Basic Concept

When it comes to Bollywood love stories, there's a pre-DDLJ era and a post-DDLJ era. Earlier, all Bollywood love were either about two warring families or the rich-poor divide.

But it was Yash Raj Films that first created a modern love story, where the problem was more about Papa's (Amrish Puri) principles and not khandaan ki izzat.

#2 Those Characters

Never had Bollywood seen such characters in a movie. A wife (Farida Jalal) going against her husband's wishes for her daughter's better future, imagine that!

Also, in any other Bollywood movie, Chutki (Simran's younger sister, played by Pooja Ruparel) would have been restricted to an 'aww-so-cute-song-and-dance sequence.

#1 Nobody Dies

When Raj and Simran ended up together, new paths were opened for Bollywood scriptwriters.
