Irrfan Khan Is In A Familiar Territory In Hindi Medium, It's Wit & Laughter
The last time we witnessed Irrfan Khan on screen was in his home production Madaari, which sadly had no takers. This time he is back in a territory which is now more synonymous with him – wit and laughter.
It’s an unusual combination – Irrfan Khan and Saket Chaudhary, and something unusual was expected of them. And the good thing is that the outcome is surely unusual. Their collaboration in Hindi Medium is definitely a respite from the clutter. But that said, despite being a comedy it does not evoke too much of laughter. The very introduction scene of Irrfan, when he is seated in principal’s office looks a forced effort on Irrfan’s part.
Hindi Medium deals with the trials and tribulation of a nouveau riche couple in a metro city who are hell bent ensuring a good education for their kid. A good education here is synonymous with impeccable English speaking and writing (I think) too. Saba Qamar is the latest import from Pakistan and judging by the 2.45 minute glimpse of the first look, it goes without saying that the her histrionics are way better than the last one we witnessed. Yes, we are talking about Mahira Khan. Over the past few years Irrfan Khan has gained a reputation for his impeccable comic timing despite being labelled as someone who is intense. If drawing parallels is a necessity and were to be drawn, the character will remind people of Rana from Piku. The witty, slightly confused and the guy next door is what Irrfan Khan all about in Saket Chaudhary’s Hindi Medium.
But hell yes, two actors who definitely caught our attention were Deepak Dobriyal and Amrita Singh. Deepak Dobriyal appears for few seconds in the promo and true to his calibre, certainly leaves an impression. We only hope and pray the character has substantial focus in the full-length feature. The second person who caught our attention was Amrita Singh sans dialogue and action, just a mere glimpse. Saket’s debut film (Pyaar Ke Side Effects) was lapped by all and his second (Shaadi Ke Side Effects) was a downer. Let’s just hope he is third time lucky.
