Malaal, Box-Office Collections: Damp Weekend, No Sign Of Sunshine For Meezan And Sharmin Segal’s Unrequited Love Story

Malaal opened to a disastrous start at cinemas with the film collecting under Rs 50 Lakh at the ticket windows. Starring debutants Meezaan and Sharmin Segal, the film struggled to get an audience on Friday and Saturday. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production managed to rake is lesser numbers as compared to recent films featuring newcomers. Aayush Sharma and Warina Hussain’s Loveyatri and Zaheer Iqbaal and Pranutan Bahl’s Notebook, for instance, registered better opening collections.
Meezaan is actor and dancer Javed Jaaferi’s son and Sharmin is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s niece. It’s an unrequited love story between two young adults belonging to different casts.
The movie was not promoted extensively either and hence there was no pre-release buzz around it. Films critics have been unanimous in their reviews – the film doesn’t seem to have impressed them much.
SpotboyE.com Editor, Vickey Lalwani, gave Malaal 2.5 Stars. “Wrote Pyaar Ki Kahaani in the heading, but then changed it to Dastaan. There is no kahaani, so do you want me to lie? Anyway, first things first. Meezaan Jaaferi and Sharmin Segal. Wouldn't rule out their progress, they shouldn't be termed as mere beneficiaries of nepotism a word that is coming out of my ears since a long time. Meezaan is sincere but he needs to do away with his Kunal Kapoor look-alike persona rightaway. Sharmin, his on-screen love, needs to understand that vocal cords are meant to be exerted if and when required in certain scenes. The long, stretched film (or did it just seem long) has no twists and turns and can ill-boast of any screenplay. The couple, rather the director Mangesh Hadawale, wastes an inordinate time in affirming that Sharmin and Meezaan have an affinity for each other. Hota hain in certain relationships but the preceding parts don't justify the delay in this case,” he writes.
With last week’s release Article 15 going steady at the box-office and Kabir Singh refusing to slow down, Malaal will end up being a washout of sorts at cinemas.
