Niharika: Shah Rukh wasn’t hot on skinny pants for Aryan’s character in Fan
The National Award-winning designer, who styled Shah Rukh Khan for the Yash Raj film, reveals all that went behind making the character of Gaurav
It’s a double bonanza for Shah Rukh Khan patrons this Friday as Fan sees the superstar in a double role. SpotboyE thought it would be interesting to tell you what went behind creating SRK’s two distinct looks for the film. Niharika Bhasin, who handled the styling of the Yash Raj movie, gives a lowdown.
How was it working with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time?
Brilliant! It was my first time with him, so I was anxious about how we’d take it forward. We had a presentation and he sat through it patiently. He’s an involved professional and he has a sense of where he needs to give in completely and where he needs to intervene. It was a trade-off between us – he’d have his say on Aryan (his character of a superstar) and I’d have my say on Gaurav (his character of a fan) completely.
What were SRK’s inputs?
He didn’t like certain fittings of pants for Aryan’s character. He wasn’t hot on skinny pants on suits. So, he asked me to change those and I happily did. In fact, on several occasions, he asked us to use clothes, accessories, shoes and what-nots from his wardrobe.
How did you differentiate the two characters in terms of their clothes?
We had different colour palettes for both the characters. Aryan has greys, blues and a more saturated colour palette. Gaurav has more colour in his wardrobe. We even put SRK into raste ka jeans because Gaurav is a typical fan from a Delhi middle class locality. And Shah Rukh had no hang-ups about wearing that.
How was the experience of working with Maneesh Sharma?
It was wonderful. Maneesh and I have worked together on Band Baaja Baaraat before. I was reuniting with that team. Initially, when Maneesh shared the script with me, he didn’t tell me we had Shah Rukh on board. I was so surprised when I heard that SRK is a part of the project.
While working with Shah Rukh on Fan, you were also working with Katrina Kaif and Aditya Roy Kapur on Fitoor. Why did you leave Fitoor suddenly?
I didn’t! I completed my contract and then left. Why would I leave a film randomly? I was done styling for it.
But reports suggested that you walked out of the film mid-way...
Why would I do that? Anyway, the film is over and done with. No point talking about it.
Now you’re concentrating on Shivaay. How is that going?
Ajay (Devgn) and I have a different working relationship. I deal with him more as a director than a hero, unlike Shah Rukh on Fan where he was the hero. Ajay doesn’t interfere much with my work. The film is largely shot in cool climes. I had to study the cool weather abroad and the way people dress up during winters there. It’s different from what we do in India.
What do you start next?
I have three projects lined up – one each for Rakesyh Omprakash Mehra, Ritesh Batra and DAR Motion Pictures.
