Meera Chopra: I knew my world won’t change after 1920 London

After several films down South and two projects in Bollywood, Meera Chopra is still better known as Priyanka Chopra’s cousin. The youngster hopes that her recent release – 1920 London – will make the audience take notice of her. SpotboyE caught up with the actress for a quick chat. Excerpts:

1920 London released yesterday and one of the common complaints is that it’s as clichéd as any other horror film…
Every genre has some clichés. If you make a romantic film, even there you will have certain clichés. I remember when we were shooting, Tinu (the director) used to keep saying, “We have seen this scene in many films. Should we skip this one?” I have seen him contemplating whether or not to shoot a specific scene. But when you are writing such a script, these things become an integral part of the storyline.

You reportedly wanted to walk out of the film after 15 days of shoot…
Shooting a horror film is strenuous. You don’t normally react to things the way you do in a horror film. For 15 days continuously, I was required to cry and get scared. And the shoot used to go on for 18 hours a day. So eventually, it started taking a toll on me. I went to Tinu and asked him to give me a break to regain myself. He was kind enough to give me that.

1920 London came two years after your last release, Gang Of Ghosts. Why such a long gap?
It wasn’t intentional. 1920 London ended up being delayed. We had wrapped up the film a year back and it was supposed to release last year itself, but it didn’t. The production house ran into financial trouble. It was only once that was sorted out that the film released. But it wasn’t that I wasn’t working. After completing 1920, I went ahead and did Ramu’s (Ram Gopal Varma) film, Secret which will release in August.

The film’s incessant delays must have affected you…
I used to call Tinu every month and ask him ‘What the hell is happening. When is the film releasing?’ This film is very important for me as it’s the first film where I have a solo lead. I knew my world won’t change after 1920 London. I only wanted people to know that I can act.

You began your career in the South. Now, are you juggling South films along with Bollywood?
It’s been two years since I quit working in the South. I want to solely concentrate on Bollywood. I worked there for three years and did almost 18-20 films. But now, I want to work with people with whom I can talk to during the shooting of the film. I could barely talk there because of the language barrier. I didn’t enjoy working there at all.

Buzz is, you have been finalised for a film opposite Sunny Deol.
It’s true that the film has been offered to me, but I haven’t signed it yet.
