A few days back, we met senior actress Bhagyashree’s son Abhimanyu Dassani at Mehboob studios. We spoke on a range of topics, right from his debut project to nepotism and of course, the #MeToo movement.
Abhimanyu started the interview by explaining his character. He said, “I play a character named Surya, who has a disease called congenital insensitivity to pain. It’s a very rare disease and children at the age of 3-4 pass away due to it. It’s a serious condition and we have taken this cinematic liberty that he has grown up only with his father and grandfather and he learns martial arts watching movies and he’s a very black and white character, there’s no grey. He is socially awkward. He’s the Po of Kung Fu Panda, that’s the easiest example I can give you. We all have a kid in ourselves, who sees dreams and Surya is a kid who chases his dreams. I hope when everyone watches the film, they find a little bit of themselves in Surya or they find little of Surya in themselves.”

Abhimanyu further revealed that he has assisted on the sets of a few films like Dum Maaro Dum, Nautanki Saala and has also directed a documentary which never saw the light of the day. Furthermore, he revealed that his mom and legendary actress Bhagyashree had no clue that he was auditioning for a film. He told us, “They had no clue that I was auditioning for this film and by the time I was selected and I negotiated my contract; my parents were on a vacation. I called and told them, I am doing this film. To be honest, the whole script wasn’t even read by me, I just believed so much in my director.”
Moving on, we asked him, if he feels pressurised or burdened on being called as Bhagyashree’s son. He said, “I can’t even dream or imagine touching what my mom has achieved. It’s been 30 years and you still fondly take her name as Suman. And it’s not in India, we travel in any part of the world, people still recognise her. Which character lives that long? What she has achieved is unbelievable. I am just scratching on the surface right now.” Not only this, he went on to say how he used to feel possessive about his mom as a kid, when he used to watch her in different movies.
For those who don’t know, Abhimanyu and Radhika Madan have done every action scene by themselves and no body double was used during the sequences. Abhimanyu even narrated a story on how he got a deep cut on his right leg while shooting for the film and his mother who was on sets at the time got teary-eyed after she saw the film. The actor also revealed that he would want to work with Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in future.
We concluded the interview by asking him about nepotism and the #MeToo movement. Watch the entire exclusive interview above. Stay tuned as we will soon bring you the exclusive interviews of Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota leading lady Radhika Madan and the villain of the film, Gulshan Devaiah.
