Soukarya Ghosal: The sketches of Satyajit Ray inspired me, says Bhoot Pori director
Soukarya Ghosal has won accolades for his film Rainbow Jelly and his next film Bhoot Pori is being waited for with eager anticipation. But how many know that the young director started his career as an illustrator? Also, it might not come as a surprise to learn that a Bengali film-maker sees Satyajit Ray as an inspiration. But it is quite a surprise to know that Soukarya was inspired not by Ray the director, but by the legend’s writing and his sketches.

“I found inspiration in Ray’s writing and his sketches. I was working as an illustrator for a Bengali daily back then. I was also dabbling a little in writing. Then I interviewed Shahrukh Khan for his film Ra.One and came into mainstream journalism,” reminisces Soukarya. What brought him to films then? “Cinema had always attracted me as an art form. I was mainly drawn to cinema because of sound. Because I was drawing cartoons, I couldn’t use sound as a form of expression. I started craving for sound.”

Then came inspiration in the form of Chandril Bhattacharya, writer and member of famous Bangla band Chandrabindoo. “I was working on the script for Pendulum back then. Chandril-da read the script and insisted that I make the film. So I took a leap of faith,” says Soukarya.

Wasn’t it a challenge to leave a regular job and jump into the uncertain world of film-making? Soukarya differs, “The uncertainty attracted me to films. My friends and family members have big jobs, but I saw that they too are insecure about getting the pink slip. Uncertainty is everywhere, not just in the business of film-making.”
