Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan: Shooting in Thailand was in itself an adventure, recollects director Sayantan Ghosal
Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Koel Mallick. It also has Gaurav Chakrabarty and Kanchan Mallick in supporting roles. The treasure hunt movie releases on December 6th
Not all directors experience a near-death situation while shooting a film. But that’s exactly what happened to Sayantan Ghosal and the cast and crew of Sagardwipey Jawker Dhan. A large part of the film is shot in virgin locations of Thailand. Sayantan exclaims, “Shooting the film itself was a big adventure. At times it felt like we were in a treasure hunt too! To film in virgin islands and caves which are mostly submerged under the sea, in locations which are not shooting-friendly, it was an unforgettable experience.”
One incident in particular has left an indelible impression on Sayantan Ghosal. He says, “We were shooting a night scene on a tiny island. The only link between the island and the mainland was a narrow strip of land. After an hour of shooting, I noticed that the light stands were standing in a couple of inches of water. I didn’t pay much attention. But after a while, I saw that my feet were also underwater. Soon we realised that the island was going underwater. The narrow strip of land was more than half submerged.”
What happened then? “Our Thai coordinator barely spoke English. We couldn’t understand what he was saying. Was he asking us to stay or leave? After a while all of us started running to the mainland. I saw Koel-di pick up a chair and run. Param-da was running with a tripod. We saved whatever we could from the set. We were literally running for our lives,” recounts Sayantan.
