Purbo Poschim Dokkhin Uttor Ashbei: This film is dedicated to Krishnananda, one of the most prolific persons of the millennium, says director Raajhorshee De
Krishnananda Agamavagisha was a renowned scholar of the Tantra tradition. Raajhorshee De’s film is a collection of three stories centred around the pandit
Tantra is a subject only a brave director would choose to film, in this age of technological advances. But Raajhorshee De’s spiritual thriller Purbo Poschim Dokkhin Uttor Ashbei has tantra in its heart. What prompted Raajhorshee De to base his film on Avik Sarkar’s book Ebong Inquisition, which deals with tantra? The director explains, “In his autobiography Karl Heisenberg talks of how he arrived at his theory of uncertainty. I don’t understand him or his theory, but I chose to rebel against his belief of uncertainty. I pay homage to him by dedicating my film to one of the most prolific persons of the millennium, Krishnananda.”
For the uninitiated, a little background is necessary. Krishnananda Agamavagisha was a noted Kulin Bengali Brahmin from Sreehatta. He was a renowned scholar and sadhaka of tantra, who lived around 1575 CE. He is the author of Tantrasara. Krishnananda is considered to be one of the greatest exponents of tantric activism in Bengal. The worship of Goddess Kali as Dakshinakali is often attributed to Krishnananda.
“Keeping Krishnananda in mind, my film consists of three short stories with a backdrop of paranormal, psychic situations. Black magic, witchcraft, reincarnations also play an important part in my film. But the essence of my message is, honour your creator. Don’t wait for Grace to be bestowed upon you. Do whatever you can to make grace happen,” says Raajhorshee De.
Purbo Poschim Dokkhin Uttor Ashbei is slated to release in late November, 2019.
