Dwitiyo Purush: It’s tougher to make a sequel, says Srijit Mukherji
To say that Baishe Srabon is an iconic film would be no understatement. A gritty thriller helmed by a stellar performance by a foul-mouthed, no-nonsense Prosenjit Chatterjee, Baishe Srabon is worth more than a few re-watches. No wonder then that its sequel, Dwitiyo Purush, is one of the most anticipated films of Srijit Mukherji.

Dwitiyo Purush sees the return of Parambrata Chatterjee as Abhijit Pakrashi, Raima Sen as his girlfriend (now wife) Amrita and Abir Chatterjee as Surjo. However, the most notable absence is of DCP Prabir Roy Chowdhury, the character made memorable by Prosenjit Chatterjee.

Is it easier to make a sequel, because you have a well-established set-up to work with? Or is it tougher to deal with audience expectations? Director Srijit Mukherji emphatically replies, “Oh definitely it’s tougher. You have a tough act to follow and huge expectations to fulfill. In fact one of the reasons why I did not make a sequel for nine years is because till last year I hadn’t found a plot which would rival the complexity of Baishe Srabon.”

Baishe Srabon had released in September 2011 and has been well loved ever since. Srijit says, “Yes there is a weight of nostalgia, because very few people will actually go to watch Dwitiyo Purush with an open mind. They will be suffering from the bias from Baishe Srabon. But still I’ve taken up the challenge. Let’s see if Dwitiyo Purush can match up to it or not!”
