Wimbledon 2020 ‘Officially Cancelled’ Due To Coronavirus Pandemic First Time Since World War II

The world is in the grip of coronavirus pandemic with all countries suffering from its fatal consequences. While America, China and Britain are severly hit, other countries are seeing a rapid explosion in virus infected cases. With no vaccine in sight, the only antidote to this deadly virus at the moment is a strong immune system. While many countries have announced partial to complete lockdowns to fight the menace, some like New Zealand have declared an emergency.

World events have been cancelled and economies have come to a grinding halt. Among some big events that have had to reschedule or postpone indefinitely are IPL, Cannes Film Festival, Tokyo Olympics and now the Wimbledon 2020. An announcement made on Wednesday said that the Wimbledon 2020 has been officially cancelled. It’s the first time since World War II in 1945, that the event has been called off. The decision to cancel it was taken after an emergency meeting of the All England Club.  


The official statement read, “It is with great regret that the Main Board of the All England Club (AELTC) and the Committee of Management of The Championships have today decided that The Championships 2020 will be cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic."




Wimbledon was initially scheduled to take place between the following dates, June 29 - July 12.
