Sushmita Sen is currently basking in the success of her recently released web series, Taali, and she has been garnering a lot of praise for her role as a transgender. However, during the initial days of her career, things weren’t exactly in her favour.

The Bollywood diva made history as she was crowned Miss Universe in 1994, and later, she made her debut with the 1996 film, Dastak. Since then, there has been no looking back for her. However, apart from her professional life, Sushmita was often in the news for her controversial life choices, as she was often been the rulebreaker.

Speaking with Film Companion, Sushmita Sen opened up about the time when she was considered a bad influence back in the 1990s. When asked if there were any repercussions to being ‘bindaas’ in the film industry back then, she gave an affirmative response.

Sen said, “There were repercussions. In the 90s… because back then it was a much more closeted society so for you to speak your mind and to say anything that you believed in was like… she is bad influence, don’t get her in front of our kids and everyone else.”

Sushmita Sen has been ruling the entertainment world with her gorgeous looks and acting chops. However, things weren’t the same back in the 90s.

During the same interview, Sushmita shared that magazines would not feature her on their covers since she was loud and clear.

She added: “There was a time when they told magazines not to put me on the cover because of my quotes. I don’t blame them. I was very loud and clear.”

The actress does not mince words and despite being slammed for her opinionated views, she never stopped herself from expressing her thoughts. She also shared that the world is now far more accepting than it was back in the 90s.

“I thought if you take away my freedom to express myself, what freedom do I really have? So am I going to scare away from speaking my mind or am I just going to learn it how to say it better, say it nicer? Which I did learn because I think I didn’t have that tact before. The world is far more accepting of someone speaking their mind. There is still that ‘haw’ element but its not as bad as the 90s,” Sushmita Sen told Film Companion.

Sushmita Sen is quite popular for her intelligence, kindness, and charming personality. Not just in professional life, Sushmita Sen has broken many stereotypes by making unconventional decisions in her personal life as well.
