Tragedy struck Mumbai yet again with the demise of a 19-year-old due to food poisoning, marking the second such incident within a fortnight. Consuming shawarma from a roadside vendor in Trombay proved fatal for Prathamesh Bhokse, who passed away on Tuesday, sparking the arrest of two vendors implicated in serving spoiled chicken.

The ill-fated consumption occurred at a food stall operated by Anand Kamble and Mohammad Shaikh near Hanuman Chali on May 3, according to officials of Trombay Police. Prathamesh and his uncle, Hameed Abbas Syed, residents of Maharashtra Nagar, partook in the meal, unaware of the lurking danger.

Initially experiencing stomach pain and vomiting, Prathamesh sought medical aid at a nearby municipal hospital on May 4, receiving treatment that temporarily alleviated his symptoms. However, his condition deteriorated the following day, prompting another hospital visit, this time to KEM Hospital Parel. Despite the doctor's efforts, Prathamesh succumbed to the ordeal on Tuesday.

The grim turn of events prompted an FIR against the shop owners, based on his uncle's testimony and hospital findings. Investigating officer Amol Chate affirmed ongoing efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Highlighting the peril of consuming street food during the sweltering summer months, a doctor from KEM Hospital underscored the heightened risk of bacterial contamination, leading to severe gastrointestinal complications and, in tragic cases like Prathamesh's, fatal outcomes.

In response to the recurring incidents, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a crackdown on illegal food stalls, acknowledging the imperative of stringent regulations to safeguard public health in the area.
