Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar enjoys a huge fanbase that idolises him. He is often seen taking to his official social media handles to connect with his admirers and offer them a glimpse into his life. He recently became a victim of deepfake, when a video of him endorsing a gaming app went viral on social media. He has now reacted to the same.
Taking to his official X handle, formerly known as Twitter, Tendulkar shared the video and reacted to it. He pointed out the misuse of technology and urged netizens to report such videos in large numbers. He wrote, “These videos are fake. It is disturbing to see rampant misuse of technology. Request everyone to report videos, ads & apps like these in large numbers. Social Media platforms need to be alert and responsive to complaints. Swift action from their end is crucial to stopping the spread of misinformation and deepfakes.”

For the past few months, many celebrities have become victims of deep fakes. From Sara Tendulkar to Katrina Kaif and Rashmika Mandanna. Netizens have expressed their shock and enrage over the manipulated visual and audio content. The term gained prominence in 2017 when a Reddit user introduced a platform for sharing such content.
Quoted by NDTV, Union ITI MInister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said, “Deepfake is a big issue for all of us. We recently issued notices to all the big social media forms, asking them to take steps to identify deepfakes, for removing those content. The social media platforms have responded. They are taking action. We have told them to be more aggressive in this work. Also, we must notice that the 'Safe Harbour' Clause that most of the social media platforms have been enjoying, doesn't apply if the platforms do not take adequate steps to remove the deepfakes from their platforms.”
