Recently Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opened up about the structural racism in the UK, and while speaking with the Evening Standard, Prince Harry mentioned that he was not aware of so many issues within the UK and globally as well, and spoke about the ‘awakening’ since meeting Meghan Markle. The couple also opened up about their support for the Black Lives Matter movement, and in an article, they also called for an end to structural racism.
Vanity Fair quoted Prince Harry saying in the interview with the Evening Standard, “I wasn’t aware of so many of the issues and so many of the problems within the U.K. and also globally as well. I thought I did but I didn’t.” He also cited an example of going into a shop with kids and only seeing white dolls in the shop. “Do you even think: ‘That’s weird, there is not a black doll there?’ And I use that as just one example of where we as white people don’t always have the awareness of what it must be like for someone else of a different colored skin, of a black skin, to be in the same situation as we are where the world that we know has been created by white people for white people.”
He further mentioned that it isn't about pointing fingers or pinning blame, but instead, it is about learning.
Apart from this video interview, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry also wrote an article for the Evening Standard, in which they mentioned that as long as structural racism exists, there are going to be generations of young people of color who cannot start their lives having the same equality of opportunity as white people. “And for as long as that continues, untapped potential will never get to be realized,” they wrote.
