Navratri is dedicated to worshipping the Hindu goddess Durga and it commences with Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana. This ritual marks the installation of a sacred pot, symbolising the presence of the goddess in the home. This ritual is a significant and auspicious ceremony, and adhering to certain dos and don'ts is essential for a proper and blessed beginning to this festive period.

As per the Hindu calendar, this year the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month will start from 11:24 pm on 14th October, which will remain till 01:13 am on 16th October. In this way, on the basis of Udaya Tithi, Shardiya Navratri will start from 15 October 2023. It will end on 23rd October and Vijayadashami will be celebrated on Dashami Tithi on 24th October.

Be Mindful Of The Muhurat

On October 15, 2023, Abhijeet Muhurta will be from 11:44 am to 12:30 am and during this time, you can perform Ghatasthapana. It should be performed during the specific period known as the Shubh Muhurat, which is considered the most auspicious time to initiate this ceremony.

Clean and Prepare the Space

You have to ensure that the area where the Ghatasthapana will take place is thoroughly cleaned and purified. This reflects the readiness to invite the goddess into your home.

Use a Suitable Clay Pot or Kalash

The clay pot or Kalash you chose should be clean and preferably made of clay, copper, or silver. It should be filled with holy water and covered with a lid.

Decorate the Kalash

You can decorate the Kalash with coconut, mango leaves, and red cloth. The coconut symbolizes Lord Shiva, and the mango leaves represent prosperity and growth.

Place the Kalash Correctly

Make sure you position the Kalash in the Puja area, facing east or north, and ensure it remains undisturbed throughout the nine days of Navratri.

Perform Panchopachara Puja

Invoke the goddess by performing Panchopachara Puja, which involves offering five symbolic items – flowers, incense, a lamp, water, and food.

You have to make sure the Kalash is in a pristine condition. It should not be broken or damaged as it is considered inauspicious. You have to ensure the Kalash faces east or north to receive the goddess’ blessings. Placing it in the wrong direction is discouraged.

Once the Kalash is placed, make sure you avoid moving it during the nine days of Navratri. This is to maintain the sanctity of the ritual on the auspicious day, and avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol.
