One of the renowned directors and poets, Buddhadeb Dasgupta breathed his last at the age of 77 at his Kolkata residence on Thursday. He was reportedly suffering from kidney ailments for years. The unfortunate news was confirmed by his family, revealing the filmmaker had been ‘undergoing dialysis for some time and was scheduled for a session on 10 June.’ His wife Sohini Dasgupta said that he died in his sleep. After his tragic demise, Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee offered her condolences to the family.
Mamata Banerjee took to her Twitter handle and said that his death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. “Saddened at the passing away of eminent filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta. Through his works, he infused lyricism into the language of cinema. His death comes as a great loss for the film fraternity. Condolences to his family, colleagues and admirers,” she wrote. Bengali TV producer Raj Chakraborty also penned a heartfelt note mourning the loss of the filmmaker, tweeting, “Recipient of numerous National and International honours, legendary filmmaker and renowned poet, #BuddhadebDasgupta has passed away. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.”
