The brutal attack on students on Sunday in JNU left the entire nation shocked and enraged. A group of masked men and women, allegedly associated with ABVP, armed with sticks, rods and acid, unleashed terror and violence on the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. Several protests took place across the country and thousands of people came out to the streets condemning the violence. A few Bollywood celebrities such as Riteish Deshmukh, Swara Bhasker, Genelia D’Souza, Rajkummar Rao and others also tweeted about it expressing their anger. Most of the Bollywood biggies maintained their silence, however, Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter and shared a cryptic tweet on Jan 6.

Amitabh Bachchan’s tweet came on January 6, and was simply a folded hands emoji, leaving many confused as to what it was the megastar was trying to say. A section of Twitterati was furious and took jibes at Amitabh Bachchan and criticized him for his mute stand on the violence in JNU. Some called him spineless, some felt his onscreen personality is fake. A tweet read, “Bolo angry old man, muh kholo, kab tak khamosh rahoge, Zameer movie mein kaam kiye magar zameer kahan hai?” while another Tweet read, “What is this angry young man? Meanwhile, people gathered at Carter Road, Mumbai on Monday for a peaceful protest against the attack on students, and Bollywood celebrities such as Tapsee Pannu, Dia Mirza, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar were also a part of the protest.
