The world is hanging on a thread of uncertainty as the Asian country has witnessed yet another shocking outcome of climatic uncertainty. An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter Scale hit the eastern parts of Indonesia on Wednesday. As per the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicentre was 147 kilometres (91 miles) under the sea near the southeast of Gorontalo.

The report also stated that the tremors shook the parts of Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Central Sulawesi provinces, but no serious damage or injuries were reported. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency have also not issued any tsunami warning.

To note, Indonesia is a vast archipelago with a population of more than 270 million people. The island nation is frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Basin.

The report further stated that the tremors shook parts of Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, North Maluku and Central Sulawesi provinces. However, as of yet no severe damage or injuries have been reported.

In November 2022, Indonesia witnessed an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 the earthquake which killed at least 331 people in West Java. Since 2018, it was reported to be the deadliest earthquake in Indonesia and tsunami in Sulawesi killing about 4,340 people.

Back in 2004, an extremely powerful tsunami was set off in the Indian Ocean that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
