To release a Bollywood movie on a particular date sometimes becomes a task for the makers of the film. Over the years, Bollywood movies love to depict festive celebrations with great grandeur on the big screen, be it Holi, Diwali, or Ganesh Chaturthi, Bollywood ensures to give us all the right ingredients to make the festive platter a happening. But that’s not all! Bollywood movies also celebrate Christmas with similar zest. While the festival is an extravaganza, Bollywood movies releasing around the festival is just cherry on the top. That’s their way of giving us the Christmas gift.
However, for the longest time we have seen Salman Khan owned Eid, Shah Rukh Khan owned Diwali and Aamir Khan named Christmas after him. But releasing the film during those days is the not the only thing we are going to talk about here, their box-office collections and the verdict is what makes our Christmas merrier than ever. Speaking of Christmas, we did a little digging into our archives and have compiled a list of movies that have released during Christmas week along with their box-office collections. 2007 – Welcome/ Taare Zameen Par: Release Date (December 21) Both the films were of different genres but it still made a great watch during Christmas, despite clashing with each other. Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer collected Rs. 48 crores while Aamir Khan starrer collected Rs. 62 crores at the box-office, making both the films a super-hit one (since collections were not a big deal back then.)
2008 – Ghajini Release Date (December 25) Like we said, Aamir owned Christmas, here’s one of the films releasing Christmas week. Aamir and Asin starrer collected Rs. 114 crores which was given a verdict of Blockbuster. Even though the film is a South remake, it did create some waves.
2009 - 3 Idiots: Release Date (December 25) Here comes another Aamir film and with this movie, he inaugurated the 200 crore club. Aamir and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer earned Rs. 202 crores at the box-office. Rajkumar Hirani’s film not only becomes an All-Time Blockbuster film but also one of the highest-grossing films.
2011 – Don 2: Release Date (December 23) Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra starrer minted Rs. 106 crores at the box-office which was considered to a hit.
2012 – Dabangg 2: Release Date (December 21) Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha Starrer raked in Rs. 150 crores and the verdict for this film was Blockbuster.
2013 – Dhoom 3: Release Date (December 20) 4th Aamir movie that was released during this festival. Aamir, Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan starrer earned Rs. 260 crores at the box-office, again opening the 250 crore club with elan. With this achievement, Dhoom 3 was considered to be an All-Time Blockbuster film.
2015 – Bajirao Mastani / Dilwale: Release Date (December 18) Yes, this film was not exactly released on Christmas but these two were the only films that made the festival a little happening. Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra starrer beat SRK and Kajol starrer at the box-office. The former collected Rs. 184 crores while the latter got Rs. 140 crores.
2016 – Dangal: Release Date (December 23) 5th Aamir movie. Nitesh Tiwari’s directorial venture raked in Rs. 375 crores at the box-office. With this film, yet again, he opened the 300 as well as 350 crores at the box-office, making it an All-Time Blockbuster film. His list is quite a big deal.
2017 – Tiger Zinda Hai: Release Date (December 22) Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer minted Rs. 300 crore at the box-office along with blockbuster verdict for the film.
2018 – Simmba: Release Date (December 28) Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan starre brought Rs. 239 in their box-office case along with super-hit verdict for the film
2019 will see two movies this Christmas, one is Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha’s Dabangg 3 which will be releasing on December 20 and Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kiara Advani and Diljit Dosanjh’s Good Newwz will hit the big screens on December 27, 2020.
