The spread of novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19, all across the world has become a topic of major concern. As the virus continues to spread globally, people have been asked to avoid huge gatherings, public events, to minimize the spread of coronavirus. In fact, several concerts, gigs, awards shows and many events all across the world have been canceled or postponed in the wake of the current situation. The World Health Organization confirmed coronavirus to be a pandemic. Amidst all of this, President of the United States Donald Trump evoked the fury of a section of Netizens after he termed the Coronavirus as ‘Chinese Virus’ in his tweet.

The US President Donald Trump tweeted about supporting the American industries affected by COVIS-19, but instead of using its official name, he instead called the coronavirus, as ‘Chinese Virus’. His tweet read, “The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus. We will be stronger than ever before!” A section of Twitterati was furious, and accused him of bringing in racism when the world stands in the middle of a crisis.

One user wrote, “yes, the origin of the virus is china but trump calling it that adds to the discrimination of asians around the world. it’s racially insensitive,” while another user tweeted, “Viruses don’t have nationalities, and the virus is replicating plenty good right here in the good old USA.” Another comment read, “ There it is. I’ve been deathly afraid of this exact moment where Trump turns to racism and xenophobia and calls COVID-19 the “Chinese Virus.” We are in deep trouble as a nation now that President of the United States makes the conscious decision to go down this dark path of hate.”

Coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and has so far claimed the lives of over 7,000 people worldwide.
