While the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) announced on Sunday that finally, the much-awaited cricket tournament IPL 2020 will begin from September 19 till November 10, 2020. Following which came news of the IPL Governing Council members retaining the sponsors for the tournament to be held in UAE as per reports in PTI. However, pulling out from the sponsor's list is the mobile brand, VIVO from China. VIVO was the title sponsor for this cricket tournament and had invested Rs 2,199 crore in 2018 for a five-year deal. The move came after India and China clashes took place in Ladakh in June 2020 and Government Of India too went on to ban more than 59 Chinese apps.
In the press release of BCCI, it was stated, “The Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC) met today via video-conference to decide on the issues concerning the VIVO IPL 2020 edition. Taking note of the prevailing COVID-19 situation in India, the IPL GC decided to stage the tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the matches will be played in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi subject to necessary clearances from the Government of India.”
Probably a member of the IPL Governing Council without disclosing his identity was quoted saying by PTI, “All I can say is that all our sponsors are with us. Hopefully, you can read between the lines.”
