After derogatory remarks made by the ministers of Maldives against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi caused outrage on social media, Indian celebrities have taken to their official social media handles to urge their fans to visit Lakshadweep instead. Celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, John Abraham, and many more took to their official X handles to ask people to visit the islands of India. Some even condemned the Maldivian ministers for their language.

Apart from actors, Indian cricketers also tweeted about Indians exploring Indian islands like Lakshadweep. Fans hailed former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Venkatesh Prasad, and Aakash Chopra for promoting tourism to Lakshadweep. Amid the ongoing controversy, netizens have been trending ‘Explore Indian Islands’ and ‘Boycoot Maldives’ on X, schooling the ministers for their thought process and nasty comments on India. For those who don’t know, the unsolicited comments were made after photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Lakshadweep Islands in the first week of January to inaugurate the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection. He laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the healthcare facility as well as the five model Anganwadi centers. In a tweet, Maldives Minister Abdulla Mahzoom Majid claims that India is diverting attention from Maldives by promoting Lakshadweep as ‘another tourist spot.’ He even mentioned that India has faced challenges when it comes to competing with Maldives in beach tourism.

As the comments from the ministers were met with a huge outrage on the internet, the three ministers were suspended. The Maldivian government has even issued a statement stating that the views of the ministers were personal and that it “did not represent the views of the government of Maldives.”
