The Hema Committee report has led to actresses and other female celebrities coming out and fearlessly reporting the sexual harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment they have faced at the hands of well-known filmmakers and actors. The names of the accused that have been surfacing on the internet, have left netizens shocked. In the midst of it all, Rajinikanth has now reacted to the report MeToo row in the Malayalam entertainment industry.
On Sunday, the veteran actor was spotted arriving at Chennai airport. He was immediately surrounded by the media, who questioned him about his films. Sat in the car, navigating through the crowd, he was asked about his views on the ongoing controversy in the Malayalam entertainment industry. He denied commenting on the Hema Committee report by stating that he didn’t know anything about it. Quoted by the Free Press Journal, he was heard saying, “I don’t know…I don’t know anything about that. Sorry.”
On the other hand, Mohanlal, who has predominantly worked in the industry, resigned from his position as the President of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Breaking his silence on the Hema Committee report he stated that the government made the right decision by releasing that report. He established in his stating that while many people are involved in it, not everyone should be blamed for it. However, he assured that the ones responsible for it would be punished as the investigation is going on.
Quoted by the Free Press Journal, he said, “We welcome the Hema Committee report. It was the right decision by the government to release that report. AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked from everyone. This is a very hardworking industry. Many people are involved in it. But everyone cannot be blamed for this. Those responsible will be punished, investigation is going on. We will cooperate in the investigation process. We are here only to set things right. I am not aware of any such power group. I am not a part of it. I have not read the Hema Committee report. Wrongdoers should be punished if there is evidence against them.”
For the unversed, the Justice Hema Committee Report was released by the Kerala Government on August 19. It was reportedly established in response to the 2017 actress assault case in the Malayalam cinema.
