Excerpts:
How did Sacred Games happen?
I was shooting with Sujoy Ghosh for a feature film in
Kolkata when I got a call from Anurag Kashyap for this character in Sacred
Games. I readily agreed but Netflix has a policy that no matter who you are,
you have to audition for the part. I came back to Mumbai, auditioned and
received a call two days later saying that I am on.
Tell us about your character...
I am not allowed to reveal details about my character. We
have planned three seasons for the show and will begin shooting for Season 2
soon. It’s an interesting character and I feel blessed that it came my way.

Any special preparation for the character?
Since I am not allowed to reveal details about my
character, I can’t tell you about my preparation, but frankly, I do not have
such a big process. Mujhe sirf jo material diya jaata hai padhne ko I go for it
again and again; primarily to internalise the story. Also, I am a spontaneous
person and I follow that towards my work as well.
How was it working with Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin
Siddiqui and Swara Bhasker?
Everybody on the show is seasoned in their respective
zones. But it’s been a pleasure to work and talk to Nawazuddin. When I went to
the set the first time, he was giving a solo shot. And when you see him act
sitting near the monitor, you are blown away. Aankhon ko engulf kar lete hain
with his performance. I was nervous before giving a shot with him but told
myself to stay calm. In that moment fortunately nothing came to mind because I
was involved in my character. And Nawaaz too didn’t let anything get to me.
Surveen Chawla Is All Smiles
Would you like to do a comeback on small screen?
No, platforms such as Netflix and Amazon offer so much.
There is new content coming every single week, which doesn’t let you go.
That’s the reason I will never get time to go back to TV.
Ekta Kapoor is making remakes of her popular shows. Would you
want Kahiin To Hoga to come back and be a part of it?
No, I don't think so. Ekta Kapoor herself is so passionate about
her work and she is a true creator. I would want new stuff coming from her than
going back to what she has already done. As a matter of fact, what she is doing
with ALT is amazing. Their shows like Test Case and Haqq se are really
interesting.
You said your husband (Akshay Thakker) doesn't have a problem if you go
bold on-screen...
There is a reason why that particular person is a part of
your life. With him and me, there is no question of asking. I think when you look
for a life partner, it's very important that your individual space and
career demands be respected. He is a very intelligent man and understands what
the demands of my career are. So, it was actually never a discussion. In fact,
he is extremely supportive and if, for instance, I am doubtful, he would be the
first one to say that it’s my job and I should do it.
Are you planning a family anytime soon?
Not in near future (laughs). I don't think we have
reached a point where we are thinking of settling down. Motherhood hasn't rung
bell in my head, yet.
