TWIST IN THE TALE: Naagin 2 Loses No. 1 Position To Super Dancer Finale

The ratings of Week 51 (December 16-22) are in and they have left us dazed to say the least. In an interesting turn of events, the Super Dancer (Sony) finale DISPLACED Ekta Kapoor’s Naagin 2 – the show has been on the top spot for several weeks now -- and clinched the No. 1 position. Looks like the viewers couldn’t wait to find out who amongst the super-talented children wins the dancing reality show and preferred to watch Super Dancer over Naagin 2 during the weekend. Eventually, Ditya Sagar Bhande was declared the winner of the dance show.

Needless to say, the 9-year-old was on cloud nine (Tears And Thumkas: 10 Confessions From Super Dancer Ditya Sagar Bhande, Dec 19).

However, knowing Ekta’s class and calibre, we wouldn’t be surprised if the supernatural thriller is leading in Week 52, yet again. Moving on, Sony’s The Kapil Sharma Show, Colors show Shakti – Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki and Star Plus’ Ye Hai Mohabbatein retained their positions in Week 51 and stood at No. 4, 5 and 7 respectively.

Zee TV’s Kumkum Bhagya stumbled a bit and went from No. 2 in Week 50 (December 9-15) to No. 3 while Star Plus show Saath Nibhaana Saathiya climbed 2 notches and acquired No. 6 spot.

Meanwhile, Salman Khan-hosted Bigg Boss 10 continues to underperform and claimed the 23rd spot. This season has been an utter disappointment and at this stage in the competition, looks like no amount of fisticuffs, tears or twists can salvage the situation for this reality show or Colors.

From the leaderboard in week 51, it’s clear that GECs continue to be ruled by the clichéd subjects even in the time of Netflix and Amazon. Are makers unwilling to experiment? Or, have they just accepted the fact that unconventional themes fail to resonate with the audiences? Case in point: Jennifer Winget and Kushan Tandon’s clutter-breaking show, Beyhadh. The romantic-thriller is nowhere to be seen despite strong content and proficient actors.

In a recent interview to SpotboyE.com, TV actress Vindhya Tiwari, who recently donned a bikini for the cover of FYI, spoke about the issue and said, “Let's face it. The ratings will always come from housewives, whether you like it or not, which is why most production houses are supplying exactly what the ladies want.” (TV Bahu Vindhya Tiwari Dons Bikini, Says People Love Her Legs!, Dec 27) Point proved (yet again), Vindhya.
