On Friday, television actor Pearl V Puri was arrested by the Waliv police station on allegations of raping a minor. He was arrested under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act, in a 2019 case, and was sent to 14-day judicial custody after being presented in court on Saturday. While he is currently at the Waliv Police station, he will soon undergo a COVID-19 test as per protocol. If the report comes back negative, the actor will be shifted to Thane jail.
As per a report in ETimes, Sanjay Patil DCP (zone 2, Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar) said that as per protocol, anyone who has been arrested, has to take the COVID test. “Anyone who is arrested has to undergo a COVID-19 test. Pearl V Puri will also undergo a RT-PCR test and if it is negative, he will be shifted to Thane jail tomorrow. Right now, he is at the Waliv Police station,” he said.
After Pearl V Puri’s arrest, his colleagues from the TV industry such as Anita Hassanandani, Krystle D’Souza, Ekta Kapoor had come forward in support of Pearl. Ekta Kapoor shared a post in which she claimed that the survivor's mother had told her that Pearl Puri was innocent.
However, at a press conference, when DCP Sanjay Patil was asked about whether the accusations against Pearl were false, he said, “No, the accusations are not false. His name has come up in the investigation. There is evidence against him. That is why police has arrested him. The truth will be decided in the trial."
