Popular Tamil folk singer Ramani Ammal, also known as Rockstar Ramani Ammal, left for her heavenly abode. She breathed her last at the age of 69 in Chennai. She succumbed to a massive heart attack on Tuesday, April 4. While she had been in the Tamil music industry from the early 2000s, she shot to fame after she participated in the music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Seniors in 2017.
She became a household name due to her high-voltage and electrifying performances. Her voice would often leave the audience, the contestants as well as the judges spellbound. It was on the reality show that she was termed as a Rockstar by the judges. Talking about her beginnings, she pursued her interest in music from an early age, however, to sustain herself and her family she earned her living by working as a house maid. She continued to work as the househelp and sang at weddings until she became an established name in the Tamil music industry.
The late singer made her debut with Kadhal (2004). She went on to sing for movies like Kathayavaran, Thenavattu and Haridas. It was the lack of opportunity that made her continue her job as the house help. That is until she participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Seniors in 2017. At the age of 63, she became a household name. Not only did she become one of the top 10 finalists on the show, but was awarded as the first runner-up during the grand finale.
She went on to perform her songs in stage shows in the US, Singapore and Sri Lanka.
