Filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan who migrated to the US as he felt his life was in danger strongly welcomes the women's movement happening in the Malayalam cinema and Kerala society after the releasing of 'some portions' of the Hema Committee Report. “The Hema Committee Report, the incident which led to the appointment of Hema Commission--later the government changed it to Hema Committee to avoid legal obligation to put the commission report in Legislative Assembly-- the action of the Kerala Government in helping the culprits by hiding the report from the public for the last five years.Continuing irresponsibility of the government helping the criminals in cinema and politics mentioned in the Hema Committee report by not ordering a police investigation into it, all prove that it is not something which is confined in the cinema industry only. The Hema Committee Report actually is a document which proves the real socio-political situation of the state of Kerala.”
Sanal underlines the fact that the Hema Committee report is incomplete. “Only some portions of the report are published and the government has hidden many crucial findings of the Committee even after the Right to Information Commission approved its publication. Even after some victims came forward to raise their voices openly the government is not taking any action. It says that the legal action can be taken only if the victims initiate a legal action. This irresponsible stand of the government proves the nexus between the questionable elements in Malayalam cinema industry and the government."
He further quipped, "The nexus is so strong that the government is shamelessly covering up the criminals even after the report evoked strong social discussion.I have been talking about this criminal nexus for the last five years and I have faced retaliations. Nobody is able to stand the powerful mafia which has strong support of the ruling party and a government with vested interests. My heart felt applause to the women who decided to fight and continuing their fight even risking their lives. It is because of the fear of retaliation from the mafia-government nexus, many women still keep quiet and they are justified also. The gravity of the situation is alarming and it is clearly exposed.”
