Malayalam actor Fahadh Faasil’s third collaboration with director Mahesh Narayanan, Malik, is up for release tomorrow on Amazon Prime Video. The film is a crime thriller and will see Fahad portray the role of Sulaiman across age groups, spanning from the late 1960s to the present day.

Mahesh has shot Malik in the reverse order and when asked about it, the director explains, “It was because of the logistics for the arts department primarily. Malayalam cinema does not have as much budget compared to Telugu, Tamil or Hindi cinema. We had to build the entire terrain and the principal photography of the film happened on the set built on those six acres of land. 75 percent of the shooting happened there, so for the arts department’s convenience, we had to shoot it in reverse. For them, to build it for the beginning days then going back to the older period was easier and that was the only way I could do the film.” ALSO READ: Fahadh Faasil’s Hindi Film Debut Is Not Happening

However, going in an unconventional way brings up its own set of challenges too. “That puts a lot of limitations. Actors had to trust me on maintaining the continuity. I had to keep briefing them and we always had a written draft to follow and track,” he shares. Although, Mahesh informs that things eventually turned out for the better that way. “At one stage, I thought it would be tiring for the actors but after a point even Fahadh told me that it was very much helpful for him to play his character’s younger self due to the reverse order as the traits of the older age could be explored better during the younger age, since as a character he already knew about them,” he concludes.
