Filmmaker and actor Rishab Shetty has been garnering a lot of accolades from all corners of India for his movie, Kantara. Not only has the film become the second-highest-grossing Kannada film of all time, but the movie is doing wonders in Hindi as well. Even though the actor is a well-known name today, it took him over a decade to reach the fame and recognition he is receiving today.
During a recent interview, Rishab recalled how he had to do odd jobs to sustain himself. For the unversed, the 39-year-old filmmaker started his journey in the Kannada film industry in 2004. He shared that he sold water cans, did hotel work, and real estate as a means to support himself, all the while trying his luck in films as an actor or assistant director until he got his first film as a director in 2014. He recalled that he started doing odd jobs after his second year degree so that he could watch movies. He did any jobs he got. Shetty told Pinkvilla, "Right after the second year degree, I started doing odd jobs as I wouldn't have money for watching movies and couldn't ask for money all the time from dad right? Whatever jobs I got, I did all of them. In 2004, I started and in 2014, I got my first direction so in 10 years I had to survive."
Rishab went on to share that he always wanted to be an actor, but because he didn’t have any contacts, he didn’t get any chance in the industry. He further added that he found inspiration to pursue his career from a story about a Kannada actor’s struggle. He shared, "I wanted to be an actor but wasn't getting any chance in the industry because no contacts and I had no idea about how to approach. So I read a story about a Kannada actor about how he started off as an assistant director, got a few contacts, did some side characters, and then became a hero. Then, I thought this way seems good for people like us. After my education, I did a short-term course on filmmaking, then worked as an assistant director and after 6-7 years, I diverted into acting."
