Rishab Shetty starrer Kantara has made waves in the film industry. Released in September 2022, the movie has garnered love from all corners of the world, so much so that even after it being released on OTT platforms, it is still being screened in theatres. While, people are enjoying the time watching the film, a Muslim couple was threatened and assaulted for going to watch the movie in theatres.
The incident took place at Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka on Wednesday at noon. The couple, who were students of the KVG Institutions, has gone to Santosh theatre to watch the Rishab Shetty directorial. However, after seeing that the girl was wearing a hijab, a shopkeeper from a nearby store questioned them about their intentions behind watching the film. According to Koimoi, the complaint states that the attackers were supporting Hindu culture and prevented the couple from watching the movie under the pretense of preserving their culture. The couple had to return home with watching the film. Senior Inspector of Sullia Police Station, Dileep Rai informed Hindustan Times that they received the information about the assault through social media.
The cops tracked down the victims and asked to formally file a complaint so that they can find the culprits and punish them. The police have registered an FIR against the accused. They are being charged under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (assault), 504 (intentional insults) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Rai during the interaction told HT that they have launched a search to get a hold of the group. Written and directed by Rishab Shetty, the movie is produced by Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda under Hombale Films. While Shetty plays the lead in the movie, it also stars Sapthami Gowda, Kishore, Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, Prakash Tuminad, Naveen D Padil in pivotal roles. Apart from Kannada and Hindi, the movie was also released in Tamil, Malyalam, and Telugu. Set in coastal Karnataka, the movie deals with the issues of land politics and man vs. nature.
