Veteran Bollywood singer Sharda Rajan Iyengar left for her heavenly abode on Wednesday. Having made a name for herself in the music industry with her melodious voice during the 60s and 70s, she passed away at the age of 86 in Mumbai. According to a report by DNA, the singer was suffering from cancer. She hailed from Tamil Nadu's Brahmin family. She was regarded as one of the best singers in the Indian music industry.
For the unversed, she had received her big break in Bollywood, after filmmaker Raj Kapoor had spotted her performing during an event in Tehran, Iran. Impressed with her vocals, he had immediately offered her to sing a song ‘Titli Udi’ for his movie Suraj (1966). The song went on to become a blockbuster hit and is still considered the highlight of her career.
She went on to receive the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer for her iconic song Baat Zara Hai Aapas Ki from the movie Jahan Pyar Miley (1970). Iyengar was also the first Indian female singer to release a pop album Sizzlers in 1971.
In her illustrious career, the late singer has collaborated with many iconic singers and music composers from Bollywood like Shakar Jaikishen, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Yesudas, Kishore Kumar, and Asha Bhosle. Apart from making a name for herself in the Hindi industry, she also widely contributed to regional cinemas. She lent her melodious voice to many iconic songs in Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu and even English. In 2007, she had even composed Mirza Ghalib's ghazals for the album Andaaz-e-Bayan Aur.
