On Sunday, 14th June 2020, an ‘A-league’ actor in Bollywood, Sushant Singh Rajput, hanged himself to his ceiling fan. The industry is waking up to the importance of understanding the pressures on celebrities and talking more openly about mental health. Actors including, Mithila Palkar and Shriya Pilgaonkar are emphasizing Mental health Awareness.
Mithila Palakar took it to Instagram to share a video talking about how we as people need to change our mindsets towards the issue of mental health. She wrote, “For many, it's not easy to 'just speak to someone' but everyone wishes to be heard. Let's learn to be better listeners so we can hear the silences amidst the noise. Kindness is a very important virtue we all need to imbibe. Let's strive to share whatever little sunshine we own with each other and make this world a brighter place than what it is today”.
Shriya Pilgaonkar spoke about how to not put a person struggling with their feelings, on the spot yet be compassionate towards them. “How are you ?”, “Good. You ?”, “Ya Good...haan so I was saying ..”, Are we in this auto-mode of exchanging pleasantries without genuinely wanting to know how someone is doing? We are all guilty of this at some point. Too much time is spent making assumptions & judgments about people’s lives. Beyond ambition, success, fame, lies ..YOU..yourself .. that is waiting for your attention and all this “self “ really wants is to be heard and to be loved for what it is ...inherently ...devoid of any labels or validation. Check-in on the people in your lives and more importantly check in with yourself too. Seek help. Our emotional and mental well being is a constant work in progress. Thought this post of ‘Ways to check-in without asking’.
